JOIN HANDS DAY / STUDENT AID for the demolished shed, but he hauled away the pieces in his van. There were another 15 bags of trash that were put out for the Sanitation Department. The work started at around 9AM. There were in all about 20 volunteers who helped pitch in for this phase of the day. At around noon, the focus of the work turned to the Teleki Pál Scout Home yard. The yard was in a serious state of disrepair with trash and leaves all over the place. Here four intrepid volunteers from the previous phase as well as a dozen boys from the Scout troop got to work bagging the yard waste. All in all, about 50 bags of trash were collected. A local Hungarian business owner, Mr. Thomas Vajtay of SLM Manufacturing, generously allowed our group to fill an entire dumpster with the collected refuse. The event brought together many people that would not have otherwise worked together for a common cause. All in all, about 40 people donated their labor or resources to make the event work. Everyone involved agreed that the JOIN HANDS DAY concept is a great one, and we will all work toward making next year an even bigger success. NICOLE ALEXANDER - Member of Branch 501 Ten years ago, I along with my family moved over 3000 miles away from Old Bridge, New Jersey to Benicia, California. In 2006, finally feeling right at home and preparing to graduate from Benicia High School, my search began for a college to attend. California State University, Chico was the place that reminded me of my original hometown. Chico State has offered me a new home, which I have fallen in love with. During the past three years, I have been working on both my major in Nutrition and Foodservice as well as a minor in Business Administration. Just this past semester, I became a member of my school’s Nutrition and Foodservice Association where we raise awareness in the community regarding the importance of fitting exercise and nutritious meals into one’s daily schedule. The last two and one half years have been spent actively participating in my sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta. Last year, I served as the chapter’s Public Relation’s Coordinator where I was responsible for keeping the school and community updated on all the excellent activities my sorority had done, including our volunteer work and various fundraisers. Since moving to the town of Chico, I am attending Saint John’s Catholic Church, which is located only a few blocks from campus. The church is attached to Notre Dame Cathedral School where I have volunteered, along with my sorority, in cleaning up one weekend each fall. This is one of my favorite community service activities to participate in as the Elementary Students are often eager to spend time helping us. Beginning in February I will be interning with the Chico Unified School District performing nutrition analysis of their breakfast and lunch programs. At the present, I am not quite sure what course of professional action I will be taking when graduating next May, but I definitely would incorporate both my love for children as well as nutrition in my future endeavors.
