STUDENT AID/BRANCH NEWS voice, respect and rights in a world that continues to hold the value above the value of human life. I would like to thank my fam­BRANCH 20 On JOIN HANDS DAY, we worked together with Lower Makefield Township and Yardley Historical Association. We helped the visitors of the historic proper­ties owned by Lower Makefield Township during tour hours. Vol­unteers were available at the Slack Farmhouse throughout the day to greet and direct visitors through the tour, all the while answering questions and pointing out inter­esting details. All day we had tours to the 9 historic properties owned by the township. Shuttle buses picked people up at the Gar­den of Reflection, the Bucks County 9-11 Memorial, whose fountain was turned on for the first time. We had 80 volunteers to help on JOIN HANDS DAY. BRANCH 2, 227 For the fifth year in a row, HRFA Branches 2 and 227 have taken over 8,000 homemade cook­ies to our veterans at the VA Hos­pital in Brecksville, Ohio. Youth and adult groups (altogether 39 volunteers) worked together in buying, baking, packing, pick-ups, clean-ups and delivering cookies to honor our veterans. BRANCH 134 Our branch cleaned the grounds and the head stones in the cemetery of the Hungarian Re­formed Church of Duquesne, PA ily, especially my grandparents, Pete and Sylvia Zwierzynski, and mom Lou Ann Zwierzynski for all JOIN HANDS DAY, in preparation for the memorial day service in honor of our ance- syotrs. We had 6 volunteers work­ing on this project. BRANCH 151 Branch 151 worked along with Portersville Christian School on special projects at Pine Valley Bible Camp. Volunteers were staining, planting grass, cleaning the bam, mulching and landscap­ing. It was a great experience for the students, adults, staff at the school and also a lot of fun for HRFA members. We had 140 youth, and 21 adult volunteers for this project. 19 people helped clean Portersville Christian School. They wiped down walls and doors, cleaned out cupboards, swept floors, cleaned windows, cleaned around light fixtures, re­placed shingles on the roof, painted garage doors, replaced the door above the garage, prepared flower beds for planting, removed and broke up old steps in the house. Ten volunteers also worked in Bible Grace Church cleaning the sanctuary, vacuum­ing seat cushions, dusting wood­work, cleaning wood floors, gen­eral other cleaning throughout the church, and painting the youth room. In addition, 15 volunteers helped plant flowers in the garden of Imani Christian Academy, clean up the asphalt parking lot, and clean desks and desktops in Portersville Bible Church. the support and guidance they provide. Meikaela was recommended by Director Joe Fabri MAY, 2008 BRANCH 35 In Allen Park, Michigan, 12 volunteers cleaned the garden of the American Hungarian Re­formed Church. The youth prom­ised to help keep the church prop­erty clean and beautiful in the fu­ture. BRANCH 300 On JOIN HANDS DAY, Branch 300 worked together with Volunteer Central to beautify and enhance three Baltimore City parks (HRFA worked on Carroll Park at 1500 Washington Blvd., Baltimore). Our 31 volunteers cleaned, pulled-out weeds and placed mulch on the tree beds all around the park. Later, we cleaned-out and aerated the flow­erbeds in front of the Carroll Mansion so new plants and flow­ers could be planted while others removed trash from the perimeter of the park. The volunteers, while cleaning and beautifying Carroll Park, were pleasantly surprised to learn the history behind the park. Carroll Park is a grassy escape within a highly-industrial area of Baltimore and is home to the Mount Clare Mansion, one of the oldest and finest examples of ex­isting colonial structures in Mary­land. The Federation had only one junior volunteer participating, who eagerly worked alongside his father and grandmother. 28 FALL 2008
