The park also provides other District parks with ponds and plants, and maintenance of ponds. Participating members of HRFA’s Branch 300 were Kathy and Les Megyeri, Erika Mason, Frank Kapitan, Kati and Akos Nagy, Doug Eckley, Atilla Kocsis, and Katherine Wimbish and her son Darin. Other participants were HRFA’s President Jules G. Balogh, Ed Lewis, member of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, and Frank Hum, member of Woman’s Life Insurance Society. We all met on Saturday, May 5, at 8:20 am in the parking lot of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. Registration for the project started 10 minutes later and by 9 am, we were all on our knees pulling weeds out of the flower gardens by the entrance to the park. Later we planted new flowers and placed mulch on the areas we had just cleaned. We had a great time. Even our junior member was eagerly pulling out the weeds, but what he most enjoyed was the walk around the park after we finished our work. He kept admiring the water and the plants. By 12:30 we were finished and ready for lunch, but instead of having lunch together this year, we all went home since most of HRFA’s participants had to get ready for the Annual American Hungarian Federation Ball, which was held that same evening. The thought that our work has made the only national park devoted entirely to water plants a very attractive place to visit, made this project unique and worthwhile. According to Hungarian tradition, Mother’s Day is always on the first weekend in May. The children recited poems in Hungarian to those whose children and grandchildren live too far away and could not be in town for this occasion. At the end of the performance children distributed beautiful roses among the audience, as a symbolic outreach from one generation another. Participants wanted to show their appreciation towards the elder generation, the mothers and grandmothers who gave so much. Young members of HRFA contacted the director and students of the Hungarian school and they all got involved in the preparations and the whole project. Both young and adult volunteers participated selecting poems for this occasion. During the preparation children and adults were discussing the bond between a mother and child, between generations. Also, this gave the children the opportunity to practice Hungarian and leam about the culture, which is the common bond in our fraternal benefit society. The children have been and will be coming back with other performances and projects to brighten up the days of the elderly people. Page 20 Fraternity - Testvériség - Fall 2007
