This year again, we had many wonderful people working on 14 projects some of which are recurring events from previous years. Each and every one of these programs was organized with special attention towards the branches ’ local community involvement, as well as developing cross-generational relationships. Projects dedicated to the mission of JOIN HANDS DA Y at HRFA included clean-ups around the old Bethlen Home (Branches 8 and 198), at the American Hungarian Reformed Church of Allen Park, MI (Branch 35), at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Springdale, PA (Branches 151 and 198), at the Holy Trinity Church of East Chicago, IN (Branch 176), Mars Alliance Church in Mars, PA (Branch 151), as well as around the St. Vincent facility in Miskolc, Hungary (Branch 62). Other project ideas were: Easter baskets for hospitalized children (Mr. and Mrs. Megyeri), park clean-up at Woodview Lane in Irving, PA (Branch 151), recycling of phone books (Branch 202 in Pittsburgh, PA), baking sugar- free cookies for a nursing home (Branch 501 in NJ), help with the last-minute preparations for the 2006 Church Women United Conference (Branch 20, Trenton, NJ), helping out at the Interfaith Clothing Center in Gaithersburg, MD (Branch 300), performing a play in Hungarian to church members and presenting offlowers (Branch 600). One of our recurring projects is a manifestation of cooperation of branches within the HRFA: Branch 227, teamed up with Branch 2 to bake, individually wrap and deliver 2,000 home baked cookies to the Veterans. Branch Managers Marge Nicholas (Br. 227) and Ed Szabó (Br. 2) would like to thank the following people for their dedication to the program: adult members who baked the cookies were Anna Mary Gilanyi, Emma Love, Barbara Sember, Carol Mis inary, Vikki Lytle; non-HRFA members were Shirley Painter, Christine, Chelsea, and Angie O’Brien, Jackie Kindle, Carol Burnfield, Gladys Barnett, Carol Klingen Smith, Helen Ditchey, Janice Shay, Susan Nicholas, Marge Beleny, John Painter and Bill Nicholas, youth members who wrapped the cookies individually and packed them into boxes for transportation were: Maria, Mark and Mike Sember, Kayla and Alexis Lytle, Katrina and Dan Mis inary, as well as youth non-HRFA members Tom and Hannah Shay, George Shay IV and Hannah Nicholas. Also, many thanks goes to Branch 2’s Ed and Lucille Szabó, Ann Kovach, Joanne and Lynn Sedensky, as well as to 227 Branch Manager Marge Nicholas! It is with great pride and honor that we publish the following letter addressed to the President of HRFA, for work performed by Branch 227 and 2 (Nicholas and Szabó): May 8, 2006 Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, 10000 Brecksville, Rd., Brecksville OH, 44141 Dear Mr. Balogh: On behalf of the patients and staff at the Louis Stokes Cleveland Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center, we would like to thank you and the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America for your continued support to the hospitalized veteran patients. The 2,000 cookie distribution to the patient dining room and to all the wards of the veteran patients that were unable to visit the dining room was an absolute act of kindness and generosity. Your thoughtfulness demonstrated by this donation will enhance the lives of our veterans with just the knowledge that others do care. Your commitment confirms that their service to their country has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. Sincerely, Medical (Tenter Director David Jewel Chief, External Affairs
