Christmas Preparation with HRFA On the morning of the first Saturday of December, a small group of supporters joined HRFA to celebrate the Christmas spirit in Hungarian style at the home office. Surrounded by the smell of freshly baked gingerbread (mézeskalács), we learned about Advent and how to make the traditional Advent wreath (adventi koszorú) which they could take home to celebrate the Sundays of the Advent season with their families. The fresh pine branches and needles created a comforting atmosphere in the Kossuth House. Working hard on making and decorating the wreath from scratch allowed people to take a little break from all the tasks they needed to complete in this busy season. At the end, the completed wreaths were worth the respite from the “everyday’s worries.” With the help of Ildikó Horovitz - a talented arts & crafts teacher - we could learn the tricks of handmade wool angels. This creative and fun project was joyful for everyone. It was a good feeling to express our inner child, as well as use our hands, to create this common creature of Christian Christmas. Angels have been a symbol of peace and goodness in our lives since as far back as we can remember, and it is good to go back to our roots sometimes. © We also learned how to dress up our dinner table with a nice, but simple, table ornament. This little orange ornament is a creative way of bringing another element of Christmas to the table. HRFA is dedicated to keep our Hungarian Christian spirit and traditions alive while giving financial support to all those in need. I think this event showed that it is also important for us to reach out to people in a spiritual way by keeping our roots and traditions alive and sharing them with others.
