To all who gave of their time and helped to make this year’s project better than ever, 1 thank you. Hungarian Day at Kennywood by Rose Gerzsenyi On August 4, 2004 the Hungarian Ethnic Group of Western PA celebrated Hungarian Day. In spite of the day’s rain, an excellent turn-out of people enjoyed the food and program. The Rev. Dr. Alexander Jalso gave the invocation, and the pledge of allegiance and the National Anthems of Hungary and the US were sung by the assembly with accompaniment by Alice Maclead. “Jó estét kívánok” was sung by the three young ladies who were finalists for Miss Magyar. The main speaker in Hungarian was HRFA’s own CFO, Mr. Les Megyeri, who spoke of HRFA’s history. He stated that there are about 1.5 million American-Hungarians Alex Somerville playing on living in the US and about 40,000 thep>an° persons who came to America from Hungary during the 1990’s. His wife, Kathy, spoke in English on “Tips to Stay Married to a Hungarian Husband.” It would be a great book title that would certainly be a best-seller in Hungarian communities. Her lively spirit kept the audience entertained, and they loved her tips; many women nodded in agreement with most of them, and some even requested copies of her speech. Under the direction of Christina Yakich, the Hungarian Ethnic Group of Western Pennsylvania danced. Then HRFA’s Board Member Joe Fabri recited a poem, “Egy gondalat bánt engement” by Petőfi Sándor in Hungarian. We then honored our newly crowned Miss Magyar, 17-year-old Miss Allyssa Trunzo of Glassport, PA. PA’s State Rep. from the 35lh Congressional District Mr. Marc Gergely spoke as did State Representative Mr. Nick Kotik. Alex Somerville, ten years old, completed the program by playing musical selections on his piano. The benediction was given by Rev. Dr. Daniel Borsey of the Minister Free Hungarian Reformed Church of McKeesport, PA. I would like to recognize the following groups for making our event so successful: McKeesport Hungarian Social Club—President Bob Doby; Pittsburgh Hungarian Club—President Mickey Milchavich; Ellwood City Club—President Bill Hrabosky; Zelinople Beneficial Hungarian Club— President Bob Hoffman.
