Page 21 Fraternity- Testvériség Honoring Our Veterans On Memorial Day, May 31, thousands of Americans gathered in Washington, D.C. for the dedication of the World War II Memorial on the National Mall. Here at the Bethlen Home, we honored our veterans in a special way for their sacrifices during WW11 in the Pacific and in Europe. In the afternoon, a Worship Service was conducted by the Branch Manager , the Rev. Dr. Joseph Posta. We sang patriotic hymns and meditated on the Scripture message based on Apostle Paul’s remarks in 2 Timothy 2:3: “Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.” After reading each veteran’s name and expressing our gratitude to them for preserving the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity, we observed the 60- second national moment of silence. The benediction was followed by a fellowship of strawberries and ice cream. The Rev. The plaque lists 168 church members who have served in the armed forces. From F. Nagy István, who served in the Spanish-American conflict, to David Olah, the latest member in the Persian Gulf. Julius Vargo, a veteran of Normandy’s Utah Beach invasion had the honor of placing another name on the Board. Branch 202 hosted the reception with a special decorated cake and refreshments. We have a wonderful mayor in the person of Mrs. Norma J. Ryan, who has a charming personality and the charisma to ask people to help and motivate them to participate in various projects. We thus had a nice turnout of youth and adults who worked together harmoniously to dress up the wharf with beautiful flowers for the concert goers on June 5 and 6. Branch 227 - Warren, Ohio Ohio Branches of the HRFA Participate in Join Hands Day For our Join Hands Day project this year, Marge Nicholas, Manager of Branch 227 of Warren, Ohio; Bill Nicholas, HRFA Board member; and Ed Szabó, Manager of Branch 2 of Cleveland, Ohio, traveled on Saturday, May 1, to the VA Hospital in Brecksville, Ohio, to pay homage to our veterans. Youth and adult members and volunteers of our Branch spent countless hours baking and wrapping about 700 cookies for the veterans. At the hospital, the staff greeted us enthusiastically and gladly allowed us to set up a table in the cafeteria where we had the opportunity to share wonderful fellowship with the veterans and give out the cookies. We were all touched to see how pleased and grateful our veterans were that we had thought of them and that they were still remembered. When the time came to say goodbye, there was sadness in each one of us, but there was also a feeling of thankfulness for having spent an unforgettable day with 280 men and women who had served our great country with pride and honor. Let us not forget our veterans! Marge Nicholas, Branch Manager Tel: 330-372-5183 Ed Szabó, Branch Manager Tel: 216-328-8449 Branch 300 - Washington, D.C. Join Hands Day On May 1, the Rev. Stefan M. Torok, President/CEO, and his wife, Cindy; Leslie L. Megyeri, Secretary-Treasurer/ CFO, and his wife, Kathy; Branch member Tibor Pflum and his wife, Teri Pflum, Fraternal Coordinator, headed out to Peace Lutheran Church in Washington, DC for our project. Upon arrival, the approximately 150 volunteers were separated into four groups with different assignments. Our group, which consisted of about 30 youth and adults, was assigned to pull weeds, mulch, plant flowers, sand and paint park benches at a small city park bus stop. The nice weather and the good spirit of fellowship that prevailed among us added to the success of the day. At the end of our project, all the groups were happy with and proud of the results of their efforts. One adult of Peace Lutheran Church stated that she had underestimated what the youth of the church could do. Rev.
