Kayla and Hanna Bennett Haylee Ann Fleishman Patrick Joseph Northcraft Hungarian Day Celebrated at Kennywood Park It was a beautiful day to celebrate this annual Hungarian Day at Kennywood Park on August 7, 2002. Large crowds of people, young and old, joined in the merriment that started at noon and ended in the early hours of the evening. The Hungarian dishes and pastries were the best, and the program was delightful, as always. Rose Gerzsenyi, President of the Hungarian Ethnic Group of Western Pennsylvania, led the assembly in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the National Anthem and the Magyar Himnusz. The invocation was by Fr. John Reiss of Our Lady of Hungary Shrine/Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted, Youngstown, Ohio. Under the talented direction of Melissa Tomasic, the dances by the children and the couples received a well-deserved ovation. The beautiful children’s costumes were by Christina Yakich. Also during the events of the day, Jacqueline Mader, daughter of Richard and Marianne Mader of Munhall, PA, was crowned Miss Magyar of the Tri-State Area 2002. Jacqueline is a 2002 high honors graduate of Oakland Catholic High School, member of St. Therese of Lisieux Church of Munhall, volunteer at the food bank, soup kitchen and John Heinz Day Care Center in Pittsburgh, and attends Duquesne University majoring in speech language pathology. Amongst the speakers were Marc Gergely, Candidate for State Representative 35th District, and the Rev. Alexander Jalso, Pastor, Homestead Reformed Church, Homestead, PA. HRFA Director Joseph Fabri recited the poem, “Egy gondolat bánt engem,” by Petőfi Sándor. As a representative of the HRFA and the Bethlen Home, he extended warm greetings to everyone in attendance. He also invited all American Hungarians to join the HRFA and to support the new building project of the Bethlen Home. The benediction was by the Rev. Dr. Daniel Borsay, Pastor, Free Hungarian Hungarian Day at Kennywood Park August 7, 2002 Jacqueline Mader, Miss Magyar of the Tri-State Area 2002
