FRATERNITY Page 7 parents would get her for Christmas. Instead she got colorful children’s books with thick linen-like pages. One was called The Farm and the other Peter Rabbit, the story by Beatrix Potter. Of course, she was very disappointed in not getting the desk, but she read the books over and over and over again. Christmas was also the time my father fired the furnace for the winter season. The smell of the first burst of the steam heat coming through the radiators meant the end of relying on the kitchen coal stove to heat our home. The heat from the stove never reached my bedroom, which was located off the upstairs front hallway, so my mother put warm irons in my bed to keep my feet warm. Now the doors to the front part of the house were opened - to the parlor, and to my bedroom. As we gathered around the Christmas tree in the parlor, we savored not only the fresh fragrance of the pine tree but also the smell of steam coming up in the radiators - another gift of Christmas. Our parents and what they provided was all we needed in our growing up years. And the trunkful of memories of the Christmases is ours to treasure forever.
