FRATERNITY Page 5 HAPPENINGS AT THE KOSSUTH HOUSE PRIME MINISTER OF HUNGARY VIKTOR ORBÁN VISITS THE KOSSUTH HOUSE IN WASHINGTON, D.C. The newly elected Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán visited the Kossuth House on October 6, 1998 during his first official visit to the United States. He was accompanied by the Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi, the Ambassador of Hungary Géza Jeszenszky, and other members of the diplomatic corps of the Hungarian Embassy in Washington, D.C. After viewing the Kossuth collection at the Kossuth House, the Prime Minister gave a speech in which he outlined his government’s policy for the next four years. He also touched upon the need for strengthening the cultural and economic relationships between the ethnic Hungarians in America and the “old country.” He said that his government was willing to make every effort to achieve a closer relationship with the third and fourth generations of ethnic Hungarians. This was the second time in the past seven years that a Prime Minister has visited the Kossuth House - Prime Minister József Antall was the first to do so in 1991. We consider this a great honor for it demonstrates that the Federation and the Kossuth House continue to enjoy an exemplary reputation in Hungary. As a follow up to the Prime Minister’s visit, the Political State Secretary of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zsolt Nemeth, also visited the Kossuth House on December 2, 1998. 1.
