FRATERNITY Page 29 OBITUARIES REV. GABOR BRACHNA The Rev. Gabor Brachna spent more than 56 years in the Lutheran ministry, serving congregations here and, after retirement in 1976, in Venezuela. He was born in Szarvas, Hungary, and attended Elizabeth University and Seminary in Sopron, Hungary. In 1938, the Lutheran Church in America called him to serve a community of Hungarian Lutherans on Cleveland’s near West Side, where he became the first full-time pastor of the present West Side Hungarian Lutheran Church. During the trying times of World War II, he helped settle many Hungarian families in Cleveland. In 1956, he was called to the city’s East Side, where he served as pastor of the First Hungarian Lutheran Church. He retired in 1976, and he and his wife, Ethel, traveled to South America to serve a congregation in Caracas, Venezuela. In 1982, he was given an honorary doctor of divinity degree from the Lutheran Church of Hungary. He had been dean of the Hungarian Lutheran Interest Conference in the Lutheran Church of America until 1995. He served on the examining board of the Lutheran Synod of Ohio and was a past director of the Resettlement Service of the Synod. He had also been president of the Interdenominational Pastors Association of the Conference of Cleveland and served on the board of the Hungarian American Foundation. The Rev. Brachna was ordained in 1931 and while in Hungary served congregations in Szeged and Mako. In Mako, he was offered a scholarship by his seminary to study in America, at Union Theological Seminary at Columbia University. He met his wife of 62 years while in New York. In addition to his wife, survivors include his son, Gabor S. of Shaker Heights and four grandchildren. The Rev. Brachna died at the age of 89. DR. KOMJÁTHY ALADÁR Villámcsapásként sújtotta le a szomorú hír a magyar reformátusságot itt és az óhazában egyaránt: Dr. Komjáthy Aladár, életének 67-ik évében visszaadta lelkét Teremtőjének. Amerikai második magyar gyülekezetének volt “tiszteletes és tudós lelkipásztora” Pittsburghben. Halála veszteség nemcsak a családjának, az egyházának, barátainak, de a világ magyarságának is. Dr. Komjáthy Aladár Ózdon, 1931. február 24-én született. A Komjáthy család az 1800-as évek óta töretlen sorrendben papi család volt. Komjáthy Aladár Magyarországon a kommunista uralom kegyetlen éveiben nőtt fel. Elemi iskoláit Ózdon, a gimnáziumot Miskolcon és Budapesten 1949-ben végezte. Már mint diák is, meggyőződésével szembe került az uralkodó hatalommal. A kommunista rendőrség nemcsak megfenyegette, hanem volt, amikor le is tartóztatta. Ilyen körülmények miatt hegyeken és erdőkön keresztül, élete megmentésére átlépte a “vasfüggönyt” 1949-ben és átmenekült Ausztriába. Tanulmányait Innsbmckban folytatta, majd a teológiát Hollandiában Kämpen végezte 1950 és 1955 között. A Mesteri fokozatot 1956-ban és a teológiai doktorátusát 1962-ben Princetonban szerezte meg kitűnő eredménnyel. Mint a Püspöki Tanács tagja, Béky Zoltán püspök mellett nagyon aktív és eredményes munkát végzett a hazai elnyomott református egyház érdekében az egyházak világfórumain. Lelkipásztori szolgálatot végzett Roebling, NJ-ben 8 évig, Passaic, NJ-ben 4 évig, 1 évet Warrenville, CT.-ben, s Montreálban, Canadában 21 évig szolgált. Ugyanott a McGill University asszisztens professzora is volt. Több értékes tanulmánya, könyve, cikke jelent meg. Legnagyobb sikerű munkája “A kitántorgott egyház” című könyve, amelyben az észak-amerikai magyar református egyházak történetét írta le, és azt a Református Zsinat Sajtóosztálya adta ki 1984- ben. Másik felejthetetlen teljesítménye volt a Heidelbergi Káté négyszázadik évi jubileumi kiadásában végzett fordítói közreműködése 1962-ben, amely a United Church Press nyomtatásában jelent meg, s számtalan új kiadást ért el. Február 10-én méltó szertartás keretében adták meg a végtisztességet számára az ősi templom falai között. Angolul Szűcs Zoltán, ny. püspök, magyarul Forró Sándor, az Amerikai Magyar Református Egyház püspöke hirdette az Igét. Az ősi szokást követve a jelenlévő papi sereg meghatóan énekelte gályarabjaink szívbemarkoló énekét, a “Térj magadhoz, drága Sion”-t a koporsója körül. A homewoodi temetőben helyezték örök nyugalomra, a 100 éve eltemetett Ferenczy Ferenc volt pittsburghi lelkész síija mellé. Özvegyének, Ilonának és hat gyermekének őszinte részvétünket fejezzük ki. Ózdi barátja, Csornán Endre, a Magyar Református Egyesület titkára REV. STEPHEN SZIARTO Rev. Stephen Sziarto died April 1, 1998 in Slanesville, West Virginia, at the age of 88. Bom in McDowell county, West Virginia, Rev. Sziarto served Hungarian Reformed congregations in Ohio and Connecticut. In 1951, he entered the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Most of the 20 years, the FBI kept him in the Washington Field Office. Many of the key administrators of that period were Presbyterian or Reformed. During his time in Washington, Rev. Sziarto was active in the FBI Masonic Fidelity Club and served as its chaplain in the 1960s and 1970s. Rev. Sziarto is survived by his wife Margaret Nagy Sziarto and a daughter Margaret S. Mattia. A son, Stephen F. Sziarto died earlier this year.
