Page 20 TESTVÉRISÉG STUDENTS continued I must thank you most heartily for the most generous grant to enable me to undertake research in European archives for my dissertation. I am deeply touched by the HRFA’s appreciation of my work, both past and present.” John was recommended by Elvira Petry, Director & Branch Manager Heather A. Gallimore, Member Br. 176: “I would like to thank the HRFA for the scholarship. I would also like to thank Julius Simon of the Merriville branch for recommending me. The money awarded me is being applied to my education. I am currently a junior at Purdue University pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. I am a member of the Purdue chapters of both the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers. To gain industrial experience and compliment my education, I am also involved in the co-operative education program. Every other semester I travel to South Charleston, WV to work for Union Carbide Corporation to learn valuable information not found in the classroom. I appreciate the Federation’s support of the education of America’s youth. Thank you.” JOSEPH HARTMAN Joseph Hartman, Member Br.17: “Dear Fellow Hungarians: Our descent and ancestry is one of the most noble on earth. Hungarian pride and honor is well-known everywhere. I feel that my roots as a Hungarian have firmly planted me in a window of opportunity. The pride that I spoke about was passed to me through my parents, Anton and Mary Hartman. They indulged me in pure ethnic activities starting at a young age. They opened me to everything from the soothing fiddle of Hungarian music to the finest dishes to be experienced by any culture. My gratitude for such an esteemed prize as a scholarship is immense. Thanks are in order for such a fine organization and its willingness to help young fellow Hungarians. I will put this money to use in the following year by pursuing my goal to be a biologist. I am attending Northern Michigan University, one of the finest biological science schools in the country. I will have many hands of opportunities to learn about our environment and how we can improve upon it. I have grown to love our environment and all of the lovely things it offers. I first started to grow this love at a young age while fishing with my father. I still enjoy fishing with my father today. With this scholarship and an opportunity to learn, one day I will help to preserve our environment. This will also preserve quality fishing time for fathers and sons for years to come. Thanks once again for the consideration and opportunity.” Joseph was recommended by Mrs. Helen K. Modory, Branch Manager Kimberly J. Hite, Member Br. 134: “I was born in McKeesport, PA, and lived there until the age of 10. I was baptized in and attended Sunday School at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Duquesne, PA, until that time. I moved with my family to Lincoln Park, MI, where I attended the Hungarian Reformed Church of Allen Park, MI, and completed my studies to be confirmed. While the congregation always made me feel welcome, I still do not feel the connection I feel when I return to my Duquesne Branch. I have been away from my family except for my parents for 16 years. I can’t help but feel that I have missed out on so much being away from my grandmother, Mrs. Alice Wargo, and my godmother, Mrs. Olga Darnay, as well as the life-long members of the church. I graduated from Lincoln Park High School in 1987 and spent the next two years in the U.S. Army as a Medical Specialist in order to earn money for college. As I attended Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, MI, I worked as a Home Health Aide in the homes of the handicapped. I graduated with an Associate Degree of Science in Nursing in 1993. I held my first job as a Registered Nurse on the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Unit at Wyandotte Hospital and Medical Center taking care of stroke, orthopedic and handicapped patients. I am currently a nurse on a Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and attend Madonna University, a private Christian university, working toward a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. Thank you for taking the time to read my story and consideration in helping me continue my education.” Christine M. Toth, Member Br. 134: “I would like to take this time to thank the HRFA for their generous monetary gift and also a special thank you to my Branch 134 Manager, Mrs. Olga Darnay, for all the help she has given me.
