FRATERNITY Page 24 Now in my sophomore year at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, I am a member of the Ski Club and am enthusiastically involved with my education. Ultimately, I will graduate in April 1996 as a Registered Nurse with a Bachelors of Science degree in nursing. From there, I’d like to further my education and become a nurse anesthetist. Throughout my years, my parents have encouraged me to excel, while nurturing me at the same time. They had me baptized as a babe, at Bethlehem Hungarian Presbyterian Church by Reverend Kovács, who, as you may well know, is the administrator of the Bethlen Home in Ligonier, PA. Following that, I attended church weekly and was a member of the Saxonburg Memorial United Presbyterian Church junior and senior high youth groups. Aside from myself, my mother-Beverly (Skarosi) Hazlett—is, and my late uncle-Louie Skarosi—was, also insured under the HRFA. Also, my great-grandfather Skarosi and my uncle, Pat Mastroianni, managed the Sharps ville branch before it was merged with Br. 67 in Sharon, PA. I wish to extend much thanks to the HRFA and deep appreciation to William and Helen Szuch who helped me greatly in obtaining the information necessary to apply for the student aid. ” Erzsébet T. Illés Erzsébet T. Illés, Member of Br. 15: “I would like to thank the HRFA for the Student Aid Scholarship I recently received. Also I would like to give a special thanks to Mrs. Clara Csikesz for my recommendation. I would also like to take this chance to thank my father and mother, Mr. & Mrs. Sándor Illés, for the loving support and the encouragement they continuously give me. I am currently attending Triangle Tech in Pittsburgh. I will be receiving a degree in specialized technology for architectural computer-aided drafting. I plan to continue my education in architecture as well as become involved in the field of interior design. While attending school, I also work part-time. With most of my time spent on studies and work, I still try to spend time enjoying outdoor activities throughout the year. Your scholarship is highly appreciated and is a great help to me. Once again thank you.” Monika Miko Monika Miko, Member of Br. 35: “I have been a member of the American-Hungarian Church of Allen Park, Michigan, since 1988. This was two years after my arrival to the United States from Erdély. Since my confirmation in 1988,1 have been teaching Sunday School which I am enjoying up to this day. Our church family’s and the Sunday School team’s goals are to build up the number of children attending church and its activities, and to be more dedicated and effective in our teaching. I also enjoy spending a week at Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania, at the Hungarian American Youth Camp. I have made friends for life there during the past six years, for which I am truly thankful to God. I was also an active member of the senior Christian Youth Fellowship at our church; however, due to schedule conflicts I am unable to attend all meetings. I just started my junior year at the University of Michigan-Dearbom, where in addition to working on my bachelors degree in Microbiology, I have the opportunity to conduct research in measles virus with one of my professors. I spend a lot of hours in the lab, but I enjoy it and it is a great learning experience. Being a member of the American Society for Microbiology also helps to understand current topics better, such as HIV infections. I hold office in the Pre-professional Health Society and also BBB at the U. of M-D. Both these groups are involved in helping hospitals by volunteering, the Red Cross by setting up blood drives, and the community in general by lending a helping hand to those in need. I have also completed nine months of volunteering at a nearby hospital, on my own, which really opened my eyes just to see how lucky I really am for not having any serious illnesses. Quite a few times only prayer made me strong enough to be close to those I knew were drawing near the end of their lives. My future career plans all have one thing in common: a white coat. Whichever field of medicine the Lord will guide me into, I’m sure I’ll be happy because nothing substitutes the sense of fulfillment and personal reward more than knowing that you can help the helpless. Thank you for helping me work towards this dream.” (Monika was recommended by Mrs. Ethel Teghze-Gerber, Branch Manager.)
