FRATERNITY Page 25 BRANCH 371 - Miami Beach, FL Seven years ago, Anthony Vecsesi watched Andrew Von Boross do a fencing demonstration at his church. Vecsesi was awed. "As a 10-year old, seeing people run around with swords seemed pretty exciting," said Vecsesi, now 17, who attends Miami Country Day School. Vecsesi began training with Von Boross after his demonstration and grew fond of fencing. Before Von Boross died in October, he instilled the essence of the sport in his pupil. "He taught me to love the game," said Vecsesi. "It isn't like any other sport, it's almost like a martial art." After becoming a serious competitor about a year ago, Vecsesi won seventh place in his first under-19 circuit event. He recently won first place in under-19 and second place in the men's division at the Southeast U.S. Sectionals held in Tampa on May 25 & 26. At this competition, which qualifies fencers for nationals, Vecsesi accomplished his greatest feat after beating an eight-time Soviet national champion. The 1996 Olympics might be in line for Vecsesi. It's his goal, at least. Anthony T. Vecsesi and his sister Kristina both accompanied me this year to Romania to take humanitarian relief to the poor in Transylvania (Erdély). This was the third time that we were taking parcels of food, medicine, medical equipment, clothing, etc. - I was there in person last year in March and saw the need. Our denomination and our church here in Miami sent more than $5,000 and about 10,000 kilos of relief to Transylvanian Reformed churches. Rev. John Paul Nagy, Branch Manager (Anthony and his sister Kristina are both longtime members of the Federation and grandchildren of the Rev. John Paul Nagy.) BRANCH 501 - St. George District Branch 501 of the St. George District sponsored a Swim-gym Youth Night on Saturday, May 18, 1991 at the Metuchen-Edison YMCA. The 40 people who attended (21 children and 19 adults) had use of the heated pool and gym for two hours and then were treated to pizza and soda. Each child was also given a "goodie" bag to take home. Members of Br. 501 enjoying a Swim-gym Youth Night Director Michael Pauli Jr. said that the affair was an overwhelming success and that the organizers could take pride in their accomplishment.
