A resolution on procedures to handle this and similar issues of morality was tabled, for lack of time, and referred to the churches for study before next year's meeting. However, the delegates passed an Overture to the General Synod of the United Church of Christ which calls for it to delete proposed voting membership by the gay/lesbian coalition on the Women's Center board. It also voiced support for the Biblical Witness Fellowship, which has been in the forefront of reform in the denomination, and a voice opposing gay/lesbian advocacy, by encouraging the churches to participate in and support its program. With pride as churches founded by immigrants to America's promises, the Five Hundredth Anniversary of Columbus' Discovery of the Americas was commended to the congregations as a time "to join in festal celebration of this event, both as citizens in our communities and as worshipping churches" and to "offer appropriate thanksgivings and petitions to the Lord of nations, that He might continue His blessings upon the United States of America and all the churches of the Lord Jesus Christ." New of recent outbreaks of tyranny in the Baltics led the Calvin Synod to declare its gratitude for new freedoms in Hungary and nearby nations, but also their compassion "for the subjugated peoples of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia by the Soviet Union", and their killing by the Soviet Army. They promised to "continue to express our outrage until these lands are free of their chains" and to "convey our declaration of solidarity with the captive nations to all men of good will." Numerous committees functioned during the Annual Meeting, notably the Finance Committee chaired by Rev. Kaiser. It was able to report marked progress on restoring the Synod's financial picture, but that the necessity of correcting past errors called for an increase in assessments of churches. The delegates, convinced of the soundness of the program in place now, concurred with their approval of the increases. They also went on record to see that the interests of the Bethlen Home and Student Fund would be assured to the best of the synod's ability. The United Church of Christ was represented at the Meeting by its Moderator, Mrs. Charlotte Penfield Gosselink, and by the Rev. M. Douglas Borko, Associate for the Stewardship Program unit.
