somewhere between Budapest and Sárospatak and spent 6 hours before finally arriving in Patak). It was very moving to listen to the address of the Hungarian Bishops from Kárpátalja, Felvidék, Délvidék and Erdély territories where the Hungarian population is a minority, and in many ways treated accordingly. To these Bishops, the opening of this Gimnázium meant hope for them and their people and the reassurance that the Lord does great things to those who persist in their faith and put their trust and hope in Him alone. Rev. Imre Bertalan's sermon on this opening day was from Psalm 126: "The Lord has done great things for them." It was wonderful to sing psalms of praise and thanksgiving, and to pray for God's blessings and guidance on the occasion of this new beginning. For our small group from Washington, D.C. this day will remain an unforgettable experience, as we have witnessed the laying of a cornerstone in the lives of many young Hungarian people.

Now that this memorable event has taken place, the responsibility rests with each and every one of us to support and assist all those involved in the enormous challenge of bringing back our youth to be a God-loving and God-fearing generation. May the leaders of the initial undertaking in the United States

“HATALMASAN CSELEKEDETT VELÜNK AZ ÚR”

38 évi kényszerszünet után a 459 éves Sárospataki Református Kollégium újra megnyitotta kapuit, mint egyházi intézmény. Nagy ünnepe volt ez nemcsak Sárospatak városnak, de a Tiszáninneni Egyház- kerületnek, sőt az egész Magyarországi Református Egyháznak. Túlzás nélkül állíthatjuk, hogy a magyar szellemi és kultúrális megújhodásnak is bíztató mérföldköve volt ez a tanévnyitó.

Szeptember 1-jén zsúfolásig megtelt a Sárospataki Református templom. Ott szorongott a 867 diák, akik közül az első éveseket már az egyházi iskola feltételei és követelményei alapján vették fel; 71 tanár, köztük 20 már az egyház által alkalmazást nyert új pedagógus; és a több ezret kitevő vendégsereg, öregdiák, érdeklődő. Az ige üzenetét Dr. Kürti László püspök hozta, a művészi hátteret a Debreceni Református Kollégium Kántusa és Béres Ferenc pataki öregdiák, énekművész szólója biztosította. A sok üdvözlet közül kiemeljük Dr. Kocsis Elemér püspök, zsinati elnök, valamint Dr. Andrásfalvy Bertalan művelődés és közoktatási miniszter köszöntését. A szomszédos országok magyar reformátusai is képviseltették magukat, sőt több nyugati egyház is. Számunkra jelentős volt Dr. Szűcs Zoltán, Kálvin zsinati püspöknek üdvözlő levele, valamint Dr. Bertalan Imrének,
