FRATERNITY Page 7 The first complete translation of the Bible by Károlyi until the year 1940, was revised several times, and reprinted 100 times; the New Testament of Károlyi's translation was reprinted 65 times. These editions were put out not only in Hungary, but abroad also. This Károlyi translation is the most spread among Hungarians, and is a cherished gem of Hungarian Protestants. Ferenc Toldy, a literary historian, does not give a good evaluation to this Bible. Géza Fája finds the translation correct and its language expressive. Thirty-five years after Károlyi's translation was published, the first Roman Catholic Hungarian translation appeared in Vienna by György Káldi. Káldi made his translation from the Vulgata, the official Bible of the Roman Catholic Church. Káldi translated the text of the Vulgata. About its language, Ferenc Toldy, himself a Roman Catholic, gives a favorable evaluation. It is written in eloquent Hungarian and is of high literary taste, but it has not been spread among the people as the Károlyi translation was. Actually it was not planned for wide distribution among the Hungarians, or Hungarian Roman Catholics. In the foreword to his translation, Káldi writes: "It is not necessary for everyone to read the Bible." Recently, it has been debated whether Káldi absorbed into his translation the translation of István Arator, however, some other sources give all the credit to Káldi. Among Ara tor's writings a Hungarian Old Testament translation was found. Károlyi himself only learned of this translation when his own translation was already in print. The revised edition of Káldi's Bible was printed with the financial help of Gábor Bethlen, the Protestant prince of Transylvania. Károlyi's and Káldi's translations of the Bible are two monuments of Hungarian national literature and Hungarian religious literature. A historian of Hungarian religious literature wrote: "These two translations stand parallel to each other as monuments of our Hungarian religious literature." This in highlights covers the beginnings of Bible translation into the Hungarian language. These attempts are of great importance in the development of Hungarian culture, language and literature. Adjatok hálát az Istennek—imádkozzák ma velünk együtt az Eszak-Amerikába szakadt pataki diákok, az Amerikai Magyar Református Egyesület vezetői és tagjai, a jelenlévő amerikai magyar reformátusok, akiknek nevében szólok most, hálaadással, örvendezéssel, meghatódottsággal és végtelen boldogsággal. Az amerikai magyar reformátusok az idén ünnepük száz éves évfordulóját annak, hogy a magyar református igehirdetés és gyülekezeti munka megindult az Új Világban. Bérelt szobában húzódott meg többedmagával, de már otthont emelt az árvának, gondozásra szorult felebarátjának. Mennyi munka, egyházszeretet, hűség. Száz esztendős hősköltemény, amellyel Isten szemlélteti az O Lelkének csodálatos alkotó erejét, a magyar református hit állhatatosságát, újrakezdési képességét, népünk és vallásunk szívósságát, élni akarását, hitben és engedelmeskedésben való buz- góságát. Patakot történelmi szálak fűzik Amerikához. Már 1855-ben amerikai iró könyvében szó esett arról, hogy mit jelentett a pataki iskola Kossuth Lajos életében. Másfél évszázadon keresztül az amerikai református- ság életét ihlette Patak lelkisége, szelleme és tanítása. Patakot eltéphetetlen szálak ezrei kötik az amerikai magyar reformátussághoz.
