Alexander Jalso BRANCH 176—GARY, IN HERSEY SENIOR RECEIVES WEST POINT APPOINTMENT—(Condensed from article by Eileen O. Daday—Arlington Heights) Congratulations to George Hegedűs, a senior at John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, on his recent appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Hegedűs received two nominations for the position; one from U.S. Rep. John Porter and a joint nomination from Wheeling High School principal Dr. Thomas W. Shirley and Northwest Suburban High School District 214 Naval Junior ROTC commander John Helley. The appointment is a departure of sorts for Hegedűs, who has been an active member of NJROTC his last three years of high school. But while the Navy introduced him to some military tactics, West Point and the Army were always his first choice. "My father was in the army," Hegedűs says, "so I'm following in his footsteps." In fact, his father, George B. Hegedűs, immigrated from Hungary to the United States in 1956 during the Hungarian Revolution. "He walked out of Hungary with only the clothes on his back," says his son. "He enlisted in the Army as soon as he came here." Hegedűs' mother, Marie, is also a native of Hungary. She immigrated here in 1965. Hegedűs and his older brother, Gabor, speak fluent Hungarian and maintained their ethnic heritage by attending Hungarian school in Chicago on weekends for 10 years and through Hungarian Scouts. Hegedűs, a National Honor Society officer at Hersey, plans to study pre-medicine at West Point. His future plans include medical school after West Point and a four-year commitment to the Army in the medical corps. Congratulations and best wishes to this young member of our branch.
