Although that amount may not seem impressive in terms of American currency, it represents sacrificial giving there, some persons having given a month's wages as their contribution. Those interested in this project believe that it is moving from the planning stage to reality. The cooperation of the whole Reformed/Presbyterian community will be necessary to its successful completion. The goal is some millions of dollars in a foundation for the future maintenance of the school plus a cash contribution to show our serious intention and to get things rolling. With all the needs there are at home this will not be easy, but the cause is not ours, we serve the Lord of our church, and His power is infinite. M. Eugene Osterhaven The old building of the college (1600) In his article, Dr. Osterhaven gave the historical background of Sárospatak and at the same time he confronts us with a challenge unparallel in history, namely to become part of the movement to restore the Sárospatak Academy. The above proclamation places this cause among the mission concerns of our churches and individual donors. By doing so, we join the Reformed and Presbyterian community of North America in an unprecedented "reach out" toward our Reformed brothers and sisters in Eastern Europe. Sárospatak served not only the Reformed Church, but the entire nation, therefore, we turn to all American Hungarians of four generations. If your parents or grandparents are from ABAÚJ, ZEMPLÉN, GÖMÖR, UNG, BEREG, SZABOLCS-SZATMÁR, you are already by virtue of your ancestry a part of this movement since Sárospatak provided the villages of your origin with spiritual leadership in educating your ministers and teachers for the communities of the entire upper region of Hungary. Furthermore, Sárospatak sent to North America the pioneer pastors and lay-leaders who laid the foundations of our churches, the HRFA and the Bethlen Home. Aggódtunk a lelki édesanya épségéért, életéért, amikor a keresztyén hittel szembenálló világnézettel kellett küzdenie. Lehet-é nem törődni vele ma, amikor a szabadabb magyar élet kibontakozása során az egyház intézményeinek újjáéledése is bekövetkezik? Ennek a folyamatnak anyagi terhei azonban meghaladják az egyház erejét. A magyar református egyházat évszázadokon át elszenvedett számos vesztesége között egyik legsúlyosabb akkor érte, amikor a második világháború után az állam erőszakos beavatkozása következtében elveszítette a reformáció kora óta hittel és áldozattal kiépített iskola-hálózatát. A református iskolák erőszakos megszüntetése nemcsak egyházaink, hanem a nemzet vesztesége is volt, hiszen kollégiumaink és velük együtt egész református iskolarendszerünk nemcsak hívő értelmiséget nevelt, hanem a magyar nemzeti öntudatot is ébren tartotta. A jelen változó időben alakult ki az a mozgalom, amelynek célja, hogy az egyház legalább azoknak a nevelő intézményeknek a működését nyerje vissza, amelyeket az 1948-ban kötött állam és egyház közötti szerződés meghagyott az egyház gondozásában, de amelyek közül csak egy, a debreceni gimnázium maradt meg.
