The response has made us realize that these facts and experiences should be recorded in our own Bethlen Archives and Museum at Ligonier. We would like to share with you excerpts from some of the letters received: — “I cherish the memories of those days. I came here with my parents in April, 1913.” “...I would write and tell you about my mother — at age 16 her mother decided it was time for her to come to America and visit her father. This was in 1913. So my grandmother sold a cow to raise the money and with her brother and sister-in-law they set out for America. My mother cried all the way because she did not want to leave her mother. . . . World War I broke out in 1914 and she could not go back. . . . she did go back to Hungary in 1973 for a visit....” “... in June of 1922, with my grandmother I came through the gates to America. ... at that time I was 11 years old. ...” “I am writing to let you know that my father arrived at Ellis Island in November 1907 from Hungary. He celebrated his 9th birthday on the ship. . . .” '‘My father will be 93 in 10 days and has a memory of his youth in Hungary that is out of this world! . . . the doctor keeps telling me to get him to quit running the snow blower and shoveling snow — but he won’t quit for anybody....” Such letters and comments are priceless, therefore, a form has been devised which will be mailed to any and to all who tell us that they arrived through Ellis Island. IF YOU KNOW OF SOMEONE - PLEASE WRITE TO HRFA: P.O. Box 917, Bethesda, MD 20817. We’ll send a questionnaire and thus, record the individual in our Archives! Branch managers, ministers, historians of our churches and communities can be of great help in locating such persons, photos and memorabilia related to the Ellis Island Story. IMPORTANT NEWS! The building which is pictured on the front page is the new HOME OFFICE of the HUNGARIAN REFORMED FEDERATION of AMERICA. It stands in the heart of downtown, on DuPont Circle, at 2001 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, a most desirable location. Plans are finally completed for the extensive renovation of the building. The target date for occupancy is May, 1986. Interestingly enough, it was exactly 50 years ago that the Federation moved from Toledo, Ohio, to the Nation's Capital city. The unanimous stand of the Board of Directors regarding the purchase of the building is the best indication of the financial stability of the Federation as well as a sign of confidence in its future.
