Page 10 TESTVÉRISÉG IS YOUR BENEFICIARY CURRENT? When was the last time you reviewed your life insurance policies to check the beneficiary status? Is the beneficiary cur­rently shown correct? Do you have a contin­gent beneficiary named? REMEMBER, when it comes time to settle your claim, you will not be here. By law, we must submit the proceeds of your life insurance policy to the beneficiary you had desig­nated and is recorded by the Home Office. Too often we have problems at the time of claim settlement whereby a beneficiary has predeceased and no contingent beneficiary is named. In such cases a copy of the death certificate of the pre­deceased beneficiary is required before the settle­ment can be made. In order to avoid any unnecessary details at set­tlement, it would be a good idea to review all of your life insurance policies. Now is the time to take care of this important matter in designating and updating your bene­ficiary. Another point to which your attention is called is that life insurance proceeds are paid in accordance with the beneficiary named and recorded at the Home Office. This takes preference over whatever might be put into your will unless it is specified to your estate. It is further suggested that you indicate the ben­eficiary on your life insurance policies and put into your will only other items which are to be distrib­uted, excluding your life insurance policies. There are also other types of beneficiary desig­nations such as revocable or irrevocable beneficiary. This is not too common with our membership but if you desire additional information on this matter, please contact us.
