YOUTH CONFERENCE A Michigan-Ohio Area Annual Youth Conference was held in the Hungarian Reformed Church in Allen Park, Michigan on Saturday and Sunday, May 1st and 2nd. The young people of the Calvin Synod, the United Church of Christ and of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America participated in a conference held in Michigan for the first time in the past 90 year history. Previous conferences were held in Ohio. The champion of bringing the youth of the two Hungarian denominations together is Edmund Vig, chief elder of the local church. He is also the National President of the American Hungarian Reformed Presbyter’s Association, which annually meets in Ligonier, Pennsylvania on the Labor Day week-end. The Presbyter’s Association is comprised of all the Hungarian Protestant Churches in the United States and Canada. This Youth Conference was originated in Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland is regarded as the “Rome” of the Hungarians in America. It is a city where they have the most Hungarians, living in one city, Budapest excepted. The Conference in Allen Park was conducted by the 1981 Officers of the National Christian Youth Fellowship: Mr. Shawn Kazay, of Allen Park, President; Miss Jennefer Vegh, of Columbus, Ohio, Vice President; Miss Sharon Galloro, of Allen Park, Secretary-Treasurer. They were very ably assisted hv the Advisors of the local C.Y.F., Mrs. Margaret Tarkanyi and Miss Helen Antol. The local C.Y.F. officers are: Sharon Galloro, President; Danny Tarkanyi, Vice President; Elizabeth Horcsik, Secretary; Denise Tarkanyi, Treasurer. Mr. Frank Nagy, Principal of Toledo, Ohio School was the main Speaker: Reasons for declining youth in the Churches. — Discussions followed. The group was divided into 8 sections and discussed the issues under the guidance of Ernest Kaplar, youth director of the Allen Park Church. In the evening the young people were entertained by the music of the “Stag”, a teenagers band; the evening ended with a “candlelight service” led by Rebecca Kaplar, former youth leader of the local church. Sunday morning during the divine worship service the young people participated with Scripture reading, prayers, etc. The sermon was delivered by Rev. Stephan Nagy, pastor of the Columbus, Ohio Church. One of the best presentations and most liked by all of the conference was “Youth Speaks Out”. It was presented by Ms. Lori Mei. She also led the discussion on various problems the young people brought up. Dr. Joseph Nemeth Professor at Bowling Green University, Ohio addressed the group on “Modern Religious Cults” and reminded everyone to be careful and not to be misled by the many dangerous sects. The election of officers for 1982—3 resulted with Albert Varga of Toledo, Ohio being elected President; George James, Des Plains, Illinois Vice President; Susan Nagy. Toledo, Ohio Secretary- Treasurer. The oath of office was administered to them by Bishop Dezső Ábrahám. The Church organizations: Dorcas Guild, Ladies Aid, Golden Circle and Martha Circle Clubs provided the food for the youth. There were also 21 homes that offered hospitality and lodging for the young people coming from far away churches. The next year’s Conference will be held in Toledo. Ohio. EV IS
