FEDERATION OF AMERICA VOLUME LVII OCTOBER, NOVEMBER, DEC., 1979 NUMBER 4 (USPS 208-820) Your Holiness, we welcome you with love. This may be your first visit to our shores as Pope, but you are not a stranger to us. We know you well. For you have touched the world as few have ever done before. We welcome you with excitement, and 1 have been especially filled with anticipation —- for I remember so well our meeting last spring at the Vatican. I remember your compassion for the most vulnerable among us — the poor, the weak, and the sick. And your concern for the values of human life. Today, you come to us as a champion of the vision that unites mankind — our creator’s vision of a world of justice and a world of peace. As you move across America the next few days, you will find a people pursuing that vision — a people from every race and every faith and every nation on earth. Too often our vision is hidden in the rush and the hurry of our times, but it remains alive — and we pray with you that your mission here will help bring to our people a renewed spirit of harmony and peace. Your visit reminds us that life’s true meaning springs from the heart and the soul — from purposes and beliefs larger than our individual lives. You have lifted up the eyes of the world to focus on the enduring values of the family, the community, human rights, and our love for one another. You have spoken out in a clear and constant voice of the dangers of moral compromise. And you have shown us that the greatest powers on earth can be moved by moral courage. And you have turned opportunity into action, reaching out to all the world, inspiring, leading and teaching. We Americans think of ourselves as people of action, too. We believe that as a nation we have a responsibility in helping others in the pursuit of peace and justice. And in that, Pope John Paul, we see you as one of our very own. And we Americans of every faith have come to love you in a very special way. On behalf of our people — and on behalf of my husband, the President of the United States — Welcome to America!
