DEBORAH MONDON, Activity Director: The 1978 Bazaar of the Bethlen Home A very wise person once listed the following as “GRAND ESSENTIALS FOR HAPPINESS”: SOMETHING TO DO . . . SOMETHING TO LOVE . . . SOMETHING TO HOPE FOR. In the Bethlen Home we try to give the guests all of these essentials. We encourage their participation in our Activity Program. Hands are kept busy for hours and by doing things persons maintain a feeling of self worth. It is nice to work and chat with friends. It is good to be doing something that contributes to the common welfare of all the residents. During the winter and spring months our residents were working for the success of our ANNUAL BAZAAR! After much preparation and anticipation our bazaar was held on August 26 at the Heritage United Methodist Church in Ligonier. Residents who were able contributed their skills to make bazaar items. Some of our ladies love to sew and crochet and were so proud to have their work exhibited and sold. Several of our men did the staining and finishing of wooden candle holders and key rings. Ladies who once lovingly cooked meals for growing families, remembered the recipes for their own family favorites and delighted the Ligonier town- folk with their Hungarian noodles and pastries. Several of our residents still have a “green thumb” and rooted plant cuttings, potting them, to sell at the plant booth. We also had a food and drink lunch counter, with Hungarian pork sandwiches, being the prime seller. A local art shop, The Garrett, donated a framed, limited edition print for raffle. A total of 407 tickets were sold for 25c each. The winner was James Fegy- verneki, a resident at the Bethlen Home. In order to have something for everyone, we also sold macrame items, flea market items and even a puppy! We are happy to report a wonderful and highly successful day with the final tally well over $1,700.00! We are happy to see the fruits of our labors but the grand success of our bazaar was largely due to the help we received from outside sources . . . people who gave of their time, effort and skills. Many helping hands volunteered to do the kitchen work, many helpers were also on the sales floor, to tally and bag purchases. Branches 6, 15, 202 and 300 participated this year, donating many beautiful craft and baked goods. Many members of the nearby Hungarian congregations and branches of the HRFA also turned out to shop and help run the bazaar. There was a good feeling and spirit of working together to accomplish a goal. Not only did we meet the challenge, we enjoyed ourselves doing it! With part of the money raised, we have purchased the following items: movie screen, shuffleboard set, rhythm hand set, Velcro dart board game, musical bingo and various other games and craft items. We will enjoy using these items, for the lives of our residents are more cheerful because of them. We are planning next year’s bazaar and hope to involve ALL the Hungarian Church groups and Federation members. We need your help, suggestions and support, and appreciate it!! The date for next year’s event will be August 25th, with tables set up during the Ministerial and Board of Directors meeting the first week in September 1979. Remember, we will be counting on you, your church and your Federation Branch to be a part of our Bethlen Home Bazaar next year. 11
