FRATERNAL CONGRESS At the New Jersey State Fraternal Congress meeting the Flag Committee made the following report: On a June day in 1885, the first flag day exercises were held in a little schoolhouse yard in Fre- donia, Wisconsin next to a one room cobblestone schoolhouse. Fraternals teach practical patriotism by inspiring love of country and respect for the American Flag. The Fraternals formed a National Flag Day Foundation and were able to establish the week in which June 14th falls as Fraternal Week throughout the nation. Fraternalists, through their state Governors and local Mayors have June 14th proclaimed Flag Day. It was a beautiful day, June 14th, 1978 as more than one thousand men, women and children gathered at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. Across the narrow stretch of water the Statue of Liberty faced to the East, still greeting the new comers as they entered the harbor of New York. Also present were a band from the army, a civilian band, and a choir from Jersey City High School in cap and gown. Behind the stage thirteen large United States flags showed their color as a breeze whipped them straight out high in the air. South of the flags, another double line of tall flags flew, one line of New Jersey State flags, the other a line of past flags of the United States in a brilliant display. Mayor Smith of Jersey City was the Master of Ceremonies. Mayor Capiello of Hoboken and other dignitaries were also present. An announcement that Governor Bryne was on his way prepared the large crowd for the sight of his blue helicopter landing on the grass in the park. Surrounded by State Police, the Governor made his way to the podium where he was the first to speak. After the Governor pointed out the connection between Fraternal Week and Flag Day, he signed his proclamation declaring this week as Fraternal week. (A.G.)
