English Section: Independence Day On July 4, 1776, 193 years ago, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress, meeting at Philadelphia. In thus renouncing their allegiance to the British Crown, Americans not only proclaimed their own independence, but set an example which influenced revolutions in France, Greece, Hungary and other countries in the 18th and 19th centuries. “We hold these truths to be self-evident,” the Declaration of Independence reads, “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness ... that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it.” At the time the thirteen colonies declared themselves independent, some three million people lived in the United States. Today they have grown to over 200 million and the number of states has increased from thirteen to fifty. Ten years ago, on July 4, 1959, the 49th star was added to the American flag, signifying Alaska’s admission to the Union; and the following July 4th, 1960, the 50th star was added, marking Hawaii’s admission to statehood.
