WHO IS A SUCCESSFUL AGENT? THE SALES REPRESENTATIVE, fiddling with his records and wondering where to go, is no sales representative. He’s just a clerk! When he is pounding the pavement, searching for new “hunting grounds” for people to tell his story to, he is no sales representative . . . he’s only a pedestrian. When he is doing the family marketing, he is no sales representative ... he is merely an errand boy. When be is driving around, looking for new outlets or going to and fro. he is no sales representative . . . he’s just a motorist. When he is waiting for the opportunity to talk witli his prospect, be is no sales representative . . . he’s just a wishful thinker. But during those few minutes when be sits before the prospect and is blasted by questions and objections . . . when he inwardly grits his teeth, outwardly smiles, pulls out his ammunition and fires away . . . then, and only then, he’s a sales representative. This all adds up to one concept of a sales representative . . . he’s a man with a single purpose. He allows nothing to stand between him and the accomplishment of this purpose. This is not to say that he doesn’t do— and do very effectively, indeed—all the things he must to help him accomplish this purpose, but he never confuses what should be done with what must be done. He looks for a way—no matter how difficult—to get a pleasant result instead of a-pleasant way to get a result. 11
