RECEIVES INTERNATIONAL AWARD The internationally renowned scientist, Dr. Dennis Gabor, received the Christopher Columbus International Communication Prize for outstanding scientific achievement in communication theory. Dr. Gabor is a staff scientist for CBS Laboratories, a division of Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc. The Christopher Columbus prize of five million lire is given annually by the City of Genoa to outstanding men of science who have contributed most to the progress of navigation, communication and telecommunication. Dr. Gabor received the prize at formal ceremonies in Genoa from the Mayor of Genoa, Mr. Augusto Pedulia, in the presence of the President of the Italian Republic Giuseppe Saragat. In presenting the award, the Mayor cited Dr. Gabor for his pioneering contributions in the mathematical theory of communication, which have led to practical applications in frequency compression and color television. The invention of holography by Dr. Gabor in 1948, Mr. Pedulia said, has opened up a new field of communication by light, sound and radio waves. Dr. Gabor is known throughout the world as the “father of holography.” Holography is the new technique of “lenseless photography,” in which an object is imprinted in three dimensions on a photographic plate by interference patterns. In addition to holography, Dr. Gabor has carried out considerable research during the past 20 years in communication theory, particularly on the problems of frequency compression and prediction, also in plasma theory. Dr. Gabor is among the most distinguished of electronics scientists. He is one of the first in his field to be made a Fellow of the Royal Society, Britain’s oldest scientific society. He is Professor Emeritus of Applied Electron Physics at the distinguished Imperial College of the University of London. He also is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a Fellow of the Television Society, and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE). Dr. Gabor is the author of numerous papers on Communication Theory, which have been published on a worldwide basis. His book on social problems, entitled “Inventing the Future” has appeared in seven languages. Dr. Gabor was born in Budapest, Hungary. He studied in Budapest and in Berlin, where he acquired his doctorate with a thesis on one of the earliest high speed cathode ray oscillographs. The Christopher Columbus Prize was inaugurated in 1953. It was first awarded to Dr. Mervin J. Kelly, past president of Bell Laboratories, and Sir Gordon Radley, former director general of the British Post Office. Last year’s prize was given to Sir Frank Whittle, one of the inventors of jet aircraft. Past recipients have also included U. S. Astronauts L. Gordon Cooper, Jr., and Charles Conrad, Jr., (1965) ; Professor Leonid I. Sedov, Moscow University, full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1960) ; and Admiral Hyman Rickover (1957). We salute and heartily congratulate another Hungarian scientist, who made good and brought fame and honor to the Hungarian name. (ed.) LIVING COSTS — If you have not been living it up in the Great Society, but your cost of living has increased anyway, stop looking for the hole in your pocket. The bureu of Labor Statistics found it in the Administration’s purse. Basing it comparison on the Eisenhower dollar (1957-59) the Bureau reported that: Your rent dollar has dropped in value to 88.8 cents. Your medical care dollar is now worth only 72.7 cents. Your transportation dollar is down to 85.9 cents. Your auto insurance dollar is reduced to 69.7 cents. Your apparel dollar is down to 88.7 cents. At this time we wish to express our thanks to our co-workers and friends nationwide for the co-operation and confidence they have shown to us and to our Federation throughout the past year. We wish all of them a bountiful Christmas rich in warmth, friendship and the gift of peace. And may their New Year be overflowing with all the physical and spiritual blessings and happiness of life.
