FRATERNITY 11 APPEARED AS SOLOIST January 6, 1966, will remain a memorable day in the life of STEPHEN ZOLTÁN KECSKEMETHY, the younger son of our national secretary and his wife, the Reverend and Mrs. Joseph Kecskemethy. The young violinist, who is a member of our Federation, after having recently received his “Performer’s Diploma” from the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, was invited to play his first concert in the Nation’s Capital by his former violin teacher, Dr. George Steiner, head of the music department at George Washington University. Through this invitation the young violinist appeared as soloist with the George Washington University Orchestra in its regular concert series — playing Bartok’s Violin Concerto No. 1. As we join the many American and Hungarian friends who attended this fine musical event in expressing our joy and conveying our congratulations and good wishes to Stephen and to his justly proud parents, we would like to substantiate his fine performance by quoting some of the words of the contributing music critic, as they appeared in review the following day in Washington’s daily newspaper, “The Evening Star”: “The George Washington University Orchestra, conducted by George Steiner and assisted by Stephen Zoltán Kecskemethy, violinist, put forth a most agreeable performance at Lisner Auditorium. Kecskemethy, the soloist in the Bartók Concerto, a young Washingtonian, a pupil of Dr. Steiner, showed himself to be a technically and expressively competent young violinist, who has a luscious tone, and a strong and secure technique already. His performance was impressive.” After his Washington performance, Stephen’s forthcoming appearances will be with the Eastman Philharmonia in March and with the Rochester Philharmonic in May of this year. Godspeed and good luck to Stephen for an exciting and brilliant career. L. Eszenyi
