FRATERNITY 9 Question: Can I draw retirement benefits at age 60 now because of the amendments? Answer: No. The change made by the amendments provide only for widow’s benefits at age 60. Retirement benefits still start at 62. Question: My dad died 10 years ago and had worked about a year under social security. Mom is 80. Is it possible she could draw widow’s benefits now? Answer: Your mother should file a claim for benefits immediately. The recent changes in the law may allow benefits to be paid to certain workers, their wives and widows 72 or older even though they had less than 6 quarters of coverage. Question: Since Medicare is in effect, should I stop my present health insurance plan? Answer: None of the health insurance programs under social security start until July 1, 1966. DON’T, because of this new law, cancel any hospital or medical insurance you may now have. Question: A “social security representative” called at my home to give me a discount rate on Medicare insurance. What is this all about? Answer: It sounds like a scheme to defraud. Under no circumstances give such a “representative” any money or sign a contract. Examine his identification card closely and report any such offers to the social security district office immediately. Question: My husband died last year. At age 60 it is difficult for me to find employment. When can I begin receiving widow’s benefits? Answer: The new law provides for reduced widow’s benefits as early as age 60. Visit your social security district office for further details. Question: I heard that the Health Insurance law has passed. My doctor tells me I will have to go to the hospital next month. Will social security pay this? Answer: No. Hospital Insurance will not begin until July 1, 1966. Question: I understand that people who are not eligible for social security will be eligible for hospital insurance. Will social security taxes finance their benefits? Answer: No. Their benefits will be financed out of the general tax funds. Question: I am over 65 and working. I have never filed an application for monthly benefits because I am earning too much. Am I eligible for the health program? Answer: Yes. The retirement test does not apply to health insurance. You should file an application for social security now even though we would not pay you monthly benefits. We need to establish a record to show that you are eligible for health insurance. Question: Will I have to go to government doctors if I take out the physician’s services in the Health Insurance Program? Answer: No. You may go to any doctor you wish.
