C. 20016 Volume XLIV JUNE-JULY 1966 Number 6-7 THE FOUNDATION OF NATIONAL LIFE THOUGHTS FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY American Independence Day marks an epoch not only in American, hut in world history as well. It marks the birth of a free nation: a nation in whose existence the oppressed of all lands rejoice and of which every true American is justly proud. In normal times and under normal circumstances it can be taken for granted that every good and loyal American feels and demon­strates this pride daily in words and deeds. But — we are living in an abnormal time and age in which pride in country and nation seems to be a slowly disappearing virtue. The present chaos at home and throughout the world is ample proof of this. Therefore, at the milestone of the 190th Fourth of July, it is timely to consider the following thoughts: “On the top of the rocky summit overlooking the hay where the good ship MAYFLOWER first cast her anchor is a magnificent statue. On the four corners of the huge pedestal are seated four figures iepresenting LAW, MORALITY, FREEDOM and EDUCATION, emblematic of the four-square foundation that supports our whole national life. Rising above these four figures is a glorious granite shaft on which stands a heroic-sized figure of FAITH. In one hand she holds an open BIBLE, symbolizing the religious Magna Charta of American history, while the other hand is raised aloft, pointing to the great white throne of Gone in the heavens. As
