2 FRATERNITY lead the people through difficulties and to inspire others bp their visions — Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, Clara Barton (the pioneer women) . . . and on and on. They gave us words of matchless council. They wrote noble history. Our third grain of corn might stand, for the work of the world that must be done, some portion of which will fall to each one of us. Without real effort and conscientious work, the good things of life really cannot be ours, no matter how much we indulge in wishful thinking or day-dreaming. It is only in Castles in Spain that the plumbing never leaks! We won’t have roses at our door unless we plant them there. Let us thank God for the work that waits for our hands to do . . . the residts of which will live after we have gone. Our fourth grain of corn may stand for our friends and loved ones. We know what joy we find in them. They round out our lives, make us richer, sympathize with us, understand ns; they share our pleasures and sorrows; they stand by us in days of shipwreck and smooth-sailing. They make our lives worthwhile. Only one grain of corn remains. Can we do better than dedicate it to God? It is not difficult to recognize the power of God in every crack of thunder or every earthquake. It is not difficult to appreciate the aesthetic quality in God when He has made so much of beauty all around us. It is not difficult to see that only a rational power could create the universe with all its wonders revealed by the microscope and the telescope. Power, beauty, intellect . . . are all revelations of God. But these qualities do not satisfy the hungry heart of man. The glory of God in the eyes of man is Creative Love. Much of what God is must remain a mystery because our minds are finite. But this we know: the quality in the personality of God is Creative Love. We all know something about human love. But God is greater than man. In Him love is raised to the highest degree. It is the riding principle. We can see God in beauty, power and mind. We can see God dimly in men and in women at their best. All that, we have is by the grace of God, through Jesus Christ. Thus with grateful hearts, mindful of the beauty of nature all about us and the greatness of the leaders of the past; thankful for the work of the world that must be done; conscious of what we owe our friends and, loved ones, let us give thanks to God, A thankful heart is a happy heart!
