2 FRATERNITY Mr. Stevan Dohanos “To Frederick H. Burkhardt, in recognition of his role in advancing the academic program of Hungarian and Uralic Studies in America.” “To Stevan Dohanos, famous artist and humanitarian of devout Hungarian parentage, who depicts and personally typifies the ideal American spirit.” “To Edward Teller, born in Hungary, staunch American, who through eminent personal leadership and scientific research successfully explored new paths to open new fields for the scientist of tomorrow.” The honored guests heard the tributes and citations, received the awards and responded with utmost humility . . . great, yet unassuming, men that they are! It was a special privilege to represent our Federation at this auspicious occasion, an evening which I shall always remember, because, upon seeing three such distinguished men honored, the full impact of the quality of leadership which Americans of Hungarian background are giving to our American way of life struck me more deeply than ever. Futhermore, it was gratifying to hear Stevan Dohanos, our great American Hungarian artist, respond with the following thoughts: “As I accept this honor, I would like to paint a picture of a little smoky town in Ohio; in it a little Hungarian Reformed church in the shade of the high smoke stacks of steel mills, and our little frame house where nine of us children were raised in a Hungarian Reformed atmosphere. For what I have become after God — I owe to the humble but God-fearing Hungarian home, to the teachings received in the little Hungarian Reformed church, where the soul of an artist was created, and to America, the country in which the artist was able to do his creative work in freedom and dignity.” Just as memorable and meaningful were the thoughts expressed by Dr. Teller, the great scientist, who closed his responsive remarks with these words: “I wish to accept this great honor as a Hungarian, which I am.” ★ ★ ★ Dr. Burkhardt, Mr. Dohanos, Dr. Teller, the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America proudly salutes you also!
