FRATERNITY 9 with other duties aloft — providing reading and writing materials to passengers, giving extra assistance to elderly travelers and those with children. Appearance counselors arrange interviews with each student so as to suggest tips on good grooming. Reviewed during these sessions are the correct use of make-up, effective speaking, posture and appropriate hair styles. Specially designed skirts and jackets are individually fitted . . . and included in the uniform ensemble are blouses, hats, topcoats, a purse and suitcase. While the curriculum is a busy one, there is time each day and on weekends for relaxation. One of the highlights of the school’s “campus” surroundings is a giant year-round swimming pool. There is a large game room and two TV rooms for evening relaxation. On weekends, visits to Chicago’s beaches, theaters and restaurants are possible. Trainees are required to be in dormitories by 10 p. m. on week days and by 1 a. m. on weekends. Upon graduation, marked by colorful, wing-awarding ceremonies, the stewardesses are assigned to one of twelve domicilie cities on United’s system, including San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver and Miami, to name a few. United, which employed the first “skygirl” in 1930, regards its corps of stewardesses as an important element in “extra care” services. A gracious and efficient stewardess is the company’s good-will ambassador and she can be the important reason why passengers return to the airline. Since pioneering stewardess service in 1930, United has trained over 10,000 young women. The average trainee is 22 years old, weighs 125 pounds and stands 5-feet-5V2-inches. It is interesting to note that today’s Jet Age stewardess is about three inches taller than her sister of thirty years ago.
