Question: My father has been on the waiting list for an immigrant visa since 1956. I am a permanent resident of the United States, but will not be eligible for citizenship for two years. Is there anything I can do before then to obtain a preference for my parents? Answer: You will have to wait until you become a naturalized American citizen. Then you will become eligible to apply for a second preference on behalf of your parents, who will then be able to immigrate if that preference is available.
