Volume XXXIX MAY 1961 Number 5 ORIGINAL COMPOSITION HONORED KOSSUTH A 12-page piece of piano music, printed in 1852 at Louisville, Kentucky, by Brainard and Co., was submitted recently by a friend of our Federation. This antique rarity was composed and performed by one of the most popular artists of the day, Maurice Strakosh, and was dedicated to Mile. Lou Cross of Louisville, Kentucky. Strakosh, who concertized throughout the United States, was born in 1825 in Lemberg, Austria, and died in Paris in 1887. He was a well-known pianist, teacher and also an impressario traveling between two continents during the years 1845-18(50. lie concertized with many famous singers of the time and managed the appearances of his sister-in-law, the legendary Adeline Patti. His activities included direction of the Academy of Music in New York for three years, also the management of his own opera company which toured American cities. He returned to Europe to continue his career until his death. The music received bears the title KOSSUTH CA LOP and was featured by Strakosh in his concert appearances. The word Galop is considered of old German origin (Hopser or Hoopla) which was introduced into the French salons about 1825, where it probably was given the name by which it is since known - Galop. 'This form gained rapid popularity in France and England, and was introduced into the Quadrille. It is a quick round dance in double time, with a springing step. This KOSSUTH GALOP is in the usual style, with the addition of an Introduction and a Coda, and contains several charming, gay themes. L. p. n.
