FRATERNITY 11 “EXPAND FREEDOM THROUGHOUT THE WORLD” To emphasize the strength of freeedom-loving people in the United States during the first day of Nikita Khrushchev’s visit at the U. N., President Eisenhower and Vice President Richard M. Nixon, and Labor Secretary Micchell met with 202 leaders of Nationalities’ groups, many of them from Iron Curtain countries, who pledged to “fight until all victims of Communist imperialism are free.” Representing 28 nationality backgrounds, including Hungarians, from 19 states, conference delegates heard Vice President Richard M. Nixon call for an “offensive based on peace through freedom to meet the Soviet challenge.” Recalling a recent statement of the Vice President in which he said, “And, may I say, that as far as the President of the United States is concerned, may the time never come when any President of the United States feels it is necessary to apologize for attempting to defend the security of the United States!”, referring to Senator Kennedy’s statement urging apologies to the Soviet Premier by our President as a result of the U-2 incident, Vice President Richard Nixon stated: “We must stand for extending freedom throughout the world. The only answer to those who boldly work for and arrogantly say that they stand for the victory of Communism over all the world, is to stand for the victory of freedom throughout the world”, the Vice President emphasized. “I know there are people who ask why we give hope to people when we are not going to wage a war in order to achieve freedom. My answer is that tyrants have always underestimated moral force and the tyrants will never be safe as long as moral force lives.” President Eisenhower, welcoming the group at the White House, said domestic problems of the day are dwarfed when compared to the age-old struggle of mankind to be free. “If we all put our minds to this struggle, we will win it”, the President told the group. Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell in a noon address said, “If we do not set as a goal for the western peoples the liberation of all nations from Communist yoke, we are not doing our duty.” He also strongly attacked the detractors of America who do not realize the consequences of their misguided statements on people outside of our own country. In a resolution proposed by former Congressman Kersten, the conference called for "a special agency in the next administration for direct liaison with the organized nationalities' groups with the aim of assisting the drive to expand freedom throughout the world as envisioned in the Vice President's acceptance speech.''
