Volume XXXVIII AUGUST 1960 Number 8 IT IS OBVIOUS THAT . . . The great threat to freedom and the great obstacle to the extension of freedom in the years ahead is communism. Communism preaches and practices the doctrine of slavery; it seeks to impose its domination over the entire world. World communism is dedicated to the destruction of all the values we prize and is ready to use any means to effect its purpose. America no longer enjoys the protection that time and distance and unchallenged technological supremacy gave us in the past. The founders of America designed our system in the belief that freedom — with all its risks — is a more dynamic concept than security. Freedom is our highest aim. Peace, coveted by all our people, is worth every sacrifice except that of freedom. For the immediate future, the tasks of protecting freedom where it now exists and of nurturing it where it can readily develop have top priority. The response of the free nations to communist aggression or threat of aggression must be as automatic, instantaneous and unanimous as it can be made. The more certain the communists are that such will be the response to acts or threats of force, the less likely that they will resort to warlike acts.
