Emery Király, Feb. 3, 1960 Treasurer INCREASE IN THE SOCIAL SECURITY TAX “Remember, there will be an increase in your social security tax for 1960”, stated William R. Spates, manager of the Washington, D. C., Social Security district office, in discussing the financing of the Social Security program. Beginning January 1, 1960, the social security contribution rate will be three per cent each for wage earners and their employers, and four and one-half per cent for the self-employed. These rates will apply to the first $4800 of earnings. The Bureau of Old-Age and Survivors Insurance provides protection for most Americans against the hazards of retirement, disability and death. Today over thirteen million beneficiaries are receiving over eight hundred million dollars each month in social security benefits, and the beneficiary rolls are increasing with each passing year. The protection afforded by this social security program has become a major factor in our American economy, and its continuance depends on the stability and soundness of the old-age, survivors and disability insurance trust funds. To assure the financing of the program on a sound actuarial basis, Congress, in August 1958, approved the contribution schedule which provides for the increased rate beginning January 1, 1960.
