10 FRATERNITY Prior to his death Father Hock told me that he was not the only Freemason among the Roman Catholic clergy. Among others, there were two bishops who became members of the Craft. One was Vilmos Franknoi, Bishop of Kassa, a celebrated historian; the other was Lőrinc Schlauch, Bishop of Nagyvarad, a well known humanitarian. Father Hock and the other Catholic priests were listed under pseudonyms in the rosters of their mother Lodges. These Catholic priests were all outstanding men in public life. This information which was passed on to me proved them to be men of good standing in Freemasonry, and as such they deserve an honored place in the memory of the Craft throughout the world. All those named and many others have promoted Hungary’s progress and welfare. In Masonry they found “more light” and thereby discerned more clearly than ever before that the true values of life are to be sought in the spiritual rather than the material realm of God’s created things. Masonry in Hungary has always stood for those ideals that are the fundamental principles of the Craft, the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Man, and for individual liberty. Today throughout Hungary the Masonic Lodges are dissolved by an arbitrary decree of the communists. Freemasons are persecuted or imprisoned; many are scattered all over the world in exile only because they have been identitfied with the Fraternity. But Masonry has survived and will survive all the calamities which fall upon it, for its principles are eternal. ETERNAL HOPE FOR FREEDOM All of our Hungarian Brothers are waiting hopefully for the time when those who are governing the fate of their beloved nation will clearly see again, when the clouds of hate will be dissipated and good-will and Freemasonry will have the right to work again in Hungary. Until that day our prayers and thoughts will be exceedingly important to them. Masonry has lived through many ages; it will grow great through many more. Today it secures a new significance to those who would seek the Truth and who labor that their world might be forever free. (The End)
