Eisenhower This Memorandum was presented by the Right Reverend Zoltán Béky, Bishop of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America and Vice President of our Federation, at the reception in the White House of the leaders of member churches of the National Council of Churches, September 9, 1959. Soon it will be three years that you, Mr. President, spoke for the whole Christian world about Budapest as a shining symbol of man’s yearning to be free. For this we are genuinely grateful. In view of the continued persecutions in Hungary, further ruthless subjugation of all religious life, forced collectivization and coercive measures against those in professions, middle class or business — in view of all these, let me plead with you, Mr. President, to forcefully present such outrages in your forthcoming discussions, also during any East-West parleys. Unless the Captive Nations will not be freed from slavery, there can be no peace in the World. We, constituent members of the National Council of Churches, pledged ourselves to promote your program for world peace, a Christian peace. We plead with you, Mr. President, to cause serious and systematic attempts be made Í71 the United Nations that the 10 Resolutions on Hungary will at last be enforced and the secret trials and mass intimidations be terminated. You, Mr. President, are the torch-bearer of freedom and the sole hope for the enslaved peoples. We are placing all our trust in you for liberation and world peace.
