2 FRATERNITY In September 1954, with these thoughts in mind, the Modern Language Association held a conference on int er-cultural understanding, bringing together language teachers, social workers, cultural anthropologists and others interested in fostering self-esteem and mutual respect among the various cultural groups represented in America. The conferees agreed that the “Melting Pot” theory is now obsolete, that the admixture of other languages and cultures does not corrupt but enriches our own culture. They agreed also that, since culture and language are inseparable, both should be taught inseparably, beginning, if possible, with very young children. DOHANOS DESIGNED U. S. JULY FOURTH STAMP Famous for his many colorful Saturday Evening Post cover illustrations, Stevan Dohanos has been commissioned by the U. S. Post Office Department to design the special issue which commemorates admission of Alaska to statehood. Proud of his Hungarian heritage, Dohanos scored a spectacular success with a letter seal he designed and donated to the American Hungarian Federation in tribute of the 1956 Hungarian uprising. These seals — showing a young girl holding the tri-color of Hungary with the Soviet emblem torn out — cropped up in such large numbers in Hungary that alarmed communists dispatched special crews to scrape them from public places. The recent special NATO postage stamp also came from Dohanos’ hand. (B. P. B.)
