FRATERNITY 7 12. Outside of your working hours, do you speak favorably about your company? 13. Is your personal appearance all that you think it should be? 14. Do you impress most people as well-mannered and polite? 15. Have your responsibilities increased since you first got the job? 16. Do you try to learn the names of your co-workers? 17. Have you spoken at a meeting or before a group in the last few months? 18. Do you care particularly if someone among your co-workers likes you or not? 19. Are you ready to accept changes in techniques as a challenge? 20. Do you know what your main deficiencies are as an employee and as a person? A score of 85 and above means you’re on your way to that next raise or promotion; 60-80 — you have the potential, but need to correct major deficiencies; below 65 — it’s time you took a full inventory of your attitudes. Remember, we started with the story about John D.? It makes one thing pretty clear — your boss will promote you, or raise your salary, for one reason only: you make yourself more valuable. So if you want a raise — and who doesn’t — don’t wait for it to be given. Give it to yourself. It’s as easy as that. INCREASE DUE IN SOCIAL SECURITY Question: I understand that the last Congress passed amendments to the Social Security Act which will increase the monthly payments of all persons who are now receiving benefits. When can we expect our first checks which will include the higher amounts? Answer: In past years each time Congress has increased benefit payments, the increase was made effective with the first month after the President signed the legislation. This year, however, the law provides that the increase in benefits will not be effective until the month of January 1959. Since social security payments are not made in advance, the check for January will not be delivered until early in February. Therefore, you can expect your first check in the higher amount about February 3 or 4. Question: Is it necessary for me to make an application or take any other action to insure that I will receive the social security benefit increase? Answer: Definity NO. The benefit increase will be made out automatically to all persons who are receiving social security payments for the month of January 1959. We repeat, the benefit increase will be automatic. No action on the part of the beneficiary is required.
