Second Class Postage Paid at the Post Office in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Volume XXXVII JANUARY 1959 Number 1 STRONG TO ENDURE A THOUGHT FOR THE NEW YEAR By Ruth Taylor There is a prayer by Robert Louis Stevenson which I have always found of great help. It is in the Evening Prayer which he used in his household in Samoa, and in which he asks: “If any awake, temper to them the dark hours of watching; and when the day returns to us, call us up with morning faces and with morning hearts — eager to labour — eager to be happy, if happiness shall be our portion — and if the day be marked for sorrow, STRONG TO ENDURE ITT Not the abasement of a plea to be spared trials or tribulations. Not a servile bowing of the head under the blow. Not a puerility of whining over unjust fate.
