FRATERNITY 5 ferment was working all over Europe, and in 1848 it burst out in France, Germany, Italy, Austria and Hungary. Kossuth was its foremost Hungarian spokesman and became minister of finances in a constitutional government approved by the emperor. In Hungary, as elsewhere, the representatives of the old order fought back. The new government was attacked by Serbian and Croatian armies from the south and by Austrian imperial troops. The Hungarian com­mander, Gen. Arthur Görgei, defeated all of them. In April, 1849, the Diet proclaimed Hungary a republic with Kossuth as president-governor. But the new Austrian ruler accepted Russian offers of aid and the Hun­garian armies were crushed and forced to surrender in August. Honored on Visit Here Kossuth fled to Turkey where he was held prisoner while Russia and Austria sought his extradition as a criminal. But the gallant Hungarian struggle had aroused sympathy in the West, and Great Britain and the United States jointly exerted sufficient pressure on the Sultan to obtain his freedom.
