FRATERNITY 13 Here, in the curving of its grassy bound, The wise old river shows its nature great. Road of the cursed centuries, turn round And speak the message of our common fate. Out of the widened windows of our griefs Our blinking eyes see every generation. The region from our lips declares beliefs: Here, and not East or West, resides your nation! 0 river of small nations, show your power; Speak with your strength the hopes I have adored: Let this dear Valley open like a flower — Lie fairer than a Garden of the Lord. Bear on your waves a treasure for all others, Filter and gather virtue yet again, That we may meet! And view as human brothers This Happy Valley full of living men. Proclaim the truth beyond all doubt and cavil, Fulfilling the supreme Creator’s plan, By bringing us, across these years of travail, The ransom-bearing words and acts of man. There is no other way; the running rills, If into Danube’s tide they fail to flow, Are lost, to East or West, among the hills. Here is the Valley where the heart should go! From the Big Bend I give this message gladly: Accept my hand, a friend would guide your fate From mutual gruiefs that doom our future sadly; Together, we may conquer ancient fate! Come to us, then! To find the mighty River, All streamlets seek this Vale’s security. No weakness is this mighty summons’ giver. Only in union shall we each be free!
