6 FRATERNITY the future freedom of this Land — a place on this continent where people may enjoy the freedom of democracy. Columbia: Michael de Kovats, your offer is accepted. I designate you to be the Colonel-Commandant and Drillmaster of Washington’s cavalry . . . (Shakes his hand) . . . FORWARD! . . . (A short interval ensues) ... Columbia: Colonel-Commandant Michael de Kovats . . . REPORT . . . No answer from you, Colonel? . . . (Meantime a young girl enters . . . carrying a sword, shako and dolman of Kovats; stops in silence before Columbia) ... I see, Colonel-Commandant Michael de Kovats, that you received the reward you were fighting for — a bullet in your noble heart which laid you low in the sally at Charleston. You gave all that a brave Magyar hussar could give for Liberty. You gave your life . . . Long live Liberty! Long live the memory of Colonel-Commandant Michael Kovats de Fabricy. (END OF ACT ONE) SECOND ACT (On the MILKY WAY, where, according to legend, all Hungarian heroes congregate after death . . . ATTILA, ÁRPÁD, HUNYADI — his son MATHIAS, ZRÍNYI, ILONA ZRÍNYI, and many heroic women of EGER.) Attila: Hold for a second! Stop fighting and listen! . . . I see a shooting star nearing our celestial path . . . Nothing unusual to us, of course, this shooting star traveling toward our horizon, because the MILKY WAY is composed of strange sky scavengers, when dislodged from their natural location by the order of the great Almighty and by his unchangeable power they gravitate toward their destination. This is a mystery to the inhabitants of the Earth, but a reality to us. When, after our earthly mission is accomplished, we pass on to immortality, reincarnated on the MILKY WAY, our mission further to pursue — fighting for the future generations — to mortals a legendary tale, but to us, here, predestination from the beginning of time. Árpád: I see from his appearance, the one nearing us, is no other than a Magyar hussar. Ilona Zrínyi: How true! Not only a Magyar hussar, but believe me, his very appearance is that of a Jasz-Kun hussar óbester. Women of Eger: Yes! ... to be sure ... He is, and a brave one . . . Hunyadi: Is he really a Jasz-Kun hussar? Then he is arriving at the proper time. The Jasz-Kun hussar’s courage in battle and swordsmanship is emblazoned in the celestial skies — their fame we are well aware of. And just now, we are in need of brave hussars of his repute. (Lightning and deep thunder clashes!)
