12 FRATERNITY “I cannot afford to take insurance” — is the answer our representatives get from certain prospects. What a paradoxical statement! If you have but a little Share in worldly goods, you are exactly the one who can assure security for your family the united way only. This excuse could be rather accepted from the wealthy who have real estate, securities and bank accounts always in good standing. A national survey reveals that the total premium income on insurance is somewhat less than the liquor bill, about equal to the tobacco bill and somewhat less than the cosmetic bill. Without poking our nose into other people’s business, we sincerely recommend a budget investigation to those who cannot find a few dollars for insurance premium purposes. A slight decrease in smoking and drinking, perhaps a little less amusement today, and there you have the solution to the problem of how to attain security for your beloved ones for tomorrow. Everyone should realize that insurance is not a luxury which might wait until family income goes higher. It is an unavoidable obligation of every conscientious man and takes priority over many other usual expenses. “$500 or maybe $1,000 will do” — others will say trying to soothe their conscience in keeping their premium as low as possible and still claiming to have some insurance protection. Sure, there (is protection in these cases, too; merely the question remains as to who is covered. With $500 benefit probably the funeral director, but the survivors cannot even attempt an impressive burial. Out of $1,000 proceeds the family will also get a few dollars barely enough to take care of the unpaid bills. If there is no other property to rely on, this sort of insurance might be considered rather a self-deception than a security. Determination of the proper amount is neither a guessing game — it must be carefully calculated based on the situation which might develop upon the untimely death of the insured. In our following articles we will describe the characteristic features of our insurance plans and possibilities, and we will try to set up some sort of guide — how to choose from those plans according to different situations. »
