TESTVÉRISÉG 5 For many years Mrs. Szabó has been well known for her literary talent and deep Christian faith. She has a sure touch in finding out the most tender spots of feminine hearts. Her book is mainly for Christian women, but can be read with deep spiritual reward by anyone. It is a clear window through which a reliable insight can be gained into the everyday life and ever-present spiritual problems of our own people, who in many instances would sink into inarticulate paganism without the pastoral care of our ministers and their devoted wives. ★ ★ ★ The REV. LOUIS NAGY of McKeesport, Pa., is a comparative newcomer in our midst, yet he has already published not less than three books in Hungarian. All of them have found a ready market and received a deserved appreciation from many readers. Studying them, I would classify all of them unhesitatingly as books written by a warm-hearted and sensitive man, who has not been blinded by the glitter and outward magnificence of the new world into which he unwillingly was thrown by forces much more powerful than his own likes or wishes. The author is a man now living in one of the greatest industrial centers of the world, who deep in his heart is still the pastor of his plain flock in a small Hungarian village, now under the rule of communist Czechoslovakia. The United States is his third country. Born in the U. S., but taken to Hungary as a child, he was educated there and had to change countries when the change of heart was already impossible. When he had to flee his new country because of the unbearable “inhumanity of man to man”, he set out to find a third country where he could serve God, humanity and country as a free Christian — leaving behind him to an uncertain fate his wife and four small children. It took years until the family could be united again, here in America. Small wonder that the books of the Rev. Louis Nagy (Kövek a Jordán vizéből, Otthoni harangszó, Testvéri szó bujdosó magyarokhoz) have readily found a large number of readers in whose hearts their message is echoing a ready and often tearful response. These books are mirrors in which many of the readers see themselves and their sentiments reflected. The author is a very good stylist and story teller of the first rank, reminiscent of those wandering minstrels of old Hungary who always found a warm welcome in the manors of the countryside and who paid for the hospitality with marvelous stories and legends of the past. Only these modern tales tell about simple village folk, whose plain and monotonous life and its problems can be recreated and made into interesting and heartwarming stories, which, despite their simplicity, are as “modern” as the hydrogen bomb. These plain folks are our contemporaries together with the split atom, and represent something that no scientific discovery, inhuman cruelty, cold fear or impending doom is able to change — the feelings, the love, the loyalties, faiths, hopes and aspirations of the human heart, however humble. For this reason I welcome the writings of Rev. Nagy with sincere appreciation. We came into this complex and astounding civilization from the same small villages of ancient Hungary. And while our unreserved loyalty belongs now to the United States, in which, with Abraham Lincoln, we also see “mankind’s only hope”, this loyalty is not harmed in the least when our memories wander back to those simple people, those pawns in the games of the powerful, who are and always will remain our brethren, who in the unexpressed yearnings of their hearts are looking to us with unshaken faith that some day their salvation will come through humanity’s most loyal servants, the American people. E pár sorban tudatom, hogy a részemre küldött arany érdemjelet megkaptam. Fogadja érette hálás kö- szönetemet. Harminchárom évi munkálkodásom után beláttam, hogy én már nem vagyok erre a munkára való: fiatalabb erő kell helyettem. Igaz, megnehezedett a tagszerzés munkája is, de lehetetlenség nincs, csak talán szemfülesebbnek kell lenni és többet kell utánajárni. Mentem én is valaha, még a zárt ajtókon és elzárkózott sziveken is keresztül törtem, hogy szeretett Egyesületünknek uj tagokat szerezzek. De épen az utánjárás fáradsága az, amit az én öreg lábaim már nem bírnak úgy, mint valaha. Uj erő, fiatalabb ember többet tud majd produkálni.
