IN PLAIN AMERICAN A monthly page conducted by Edmund Vasvary UPSWING? The Republican governors who attended the annual conference of governors, unanimously reported that a major economic upswing was in progress throughout the nation. The administration in Washington says the same, and many economists share this opinion. Some people joyously state that in sharp contrast to the usual seasonal pattern, the number of unemployed increased only 42,000 from May to June. The total of unemployed was 3,347,000 in June, which is considered satisfactory compared with the total number of gaifully employed people. This seems to mean that the so-called soft spots are getting no softer, and improvement is being recorded in important fields. * * * THE LABOR LEADERS, however, are not sharing this viewpoint. Walter P. Reuther, president of the CIO is accusing President Eisenhower’s economic advisers of a misleading and over-optimistic appraisal of the economic outlook and again urges the President to call a “Keep America at Work” conference. According to Reuther’s letter to the President, “there is nothing to indicate a general pickup in economic activity” — and emphasizes that the advisers had been guilty of a “shoddy economic analysis” and had mislead the public by being overly optimistic. Reuther urges the President to call a representative conference of industry, labor, agriculture, consumers and government. So here we are again with two totally opposite statements. Take your choice. * * * GUATEMALA’S example shows that it is possible to outwit and defeat the communistic machinations, even when a communist government is holding power. What happened in Guatemala is heartening news to those sectors of the free world where it is not yet too late to take up the challenge of communism. * * * ENGLAND’S proposal to make a no Locarno-like agreement with the Reds would mean the fixing of the present boundaries, that is: leaving everything undisturbed in the hands of the communists which they sofar acquired through trickery, infiltration, treason or blood- shedding. “Locarno” would mean that the Iron Curtain would never be lifted and those unfortunate countries, — Hungary among them — which today are under the Bolshevik heel, would remain there forever, as far as the present world leaders are concerned. It will be to the eternal credit of the United States if she emphatically refuses to participate in such infamy. * * + THE RELIGIOUS MASS MEETING in the Russian occupied German city of Leipzig deserves special attention. This was the largest religious gathering in German history. Close to half a million people participated in the final demonstration for God and Christ, and against godless tormentors. There were 65,000 registered delegates, a- mong them 10,000 who came on special trains from West Germany. The chairman was the communist Minister of Culture. The final and most tumultuous meeting was marked by very sharp attacks against the communists. Surprisingly these attacks came mostly from people who live in the East Zone, not clergymen but lay people. One woman who also lives there shouted into the microphone that the communists forced her to falsify returns of last month’s voting on the European Defense Treaty. One communist official declared that those East Germans who spoke against the communists would not be punished, although they might be “questioned”. One of the most marked anti-communist demonstrations took place at the very feet of a gigantic statute of Stalin. A Bible reading for 10,000 youths was held in the soviet exhibition hall, the largest of all. A towering cross was set up in the area dominated by a statute of Stalin, the greatest mass murderer of world history. The youths chanted in unison: “We stand with Christ! He will not let us be destroyed!” When the U. S. delegation was introduced, the applause was surprisingly very loud. ★ ★ ★ THE COMMUNIST PATTERN has become crystal clear in the Far East with the cease fire arrangements engineered by the kremlin and the peace at any price attitude of France. The communists successfully forced upon the free nations of the west a new version of “divide and conquer”. Bite off a section, call it quits temporarily, and bite some more. This pattern will be attempted in the “peaceful” solution of divided Korea. The kremlin will learn that it cannot force this pattern on Uncle Sam.
